How-To: Set the default save file format to Microsoft Excel - OpenOffice.org Calc
  1. To set the default file format when saving spreadsheets to Microsoft Excel format, first click on the "Tools" Option here.
  2. Then, on the menu that opens, click on the option "Options..."
  3. The OpenOffice options dialog should open. You should see a menu tree here. For clarity's sake, first we shall close the OpenOffice.org options by clicking on this "minus" sign.
  4. Now look for the "Load/Save" option and click on the "plus" sign beside it to view a submenu.
  5. Once the new options appear, click on "General."
  6. You should see the different loading and saving options on this part of the window.
  7. Look for the default file format options here and click on this down arrow.
  8. This lets you choose the document type that we will change the save settings for. Since we want to change the save settings for spreadhsheets, click on "Spreadsheet."
  9. Now to choose the default file format for saving, click on this down arrow here.
  10. Then, on the menu that drops down, look for the "Microsoft Excel 97/2000/XP" option and click on it once.
  11. Afterwards, just click on "OK."
  12. Now, to check, click on the "File" option here.
  13. Then, on the menu that opens, click on the option "Save As."
  14. As you can see, the default format for saving files has been set to Microsoft Excel. Congratulations!
