Alphabet

An Alphabet is a set of written and symbols used to represent the sounds of a spoken language. The combination of an alphabet's characters and symbols form syllables, words and sentences.

The modern English alphabet has 26 characters based on the earlier Latin and alphabets. This alphabet is one of the most widely used sets nowadays and most are primarily based on its characters. It has been adapted, though with some alterations, for use in many languages around the world.

OpenOffice.org is available in many languages and many different alphabets.

While the letters are fixed in an alphabet, their written appearance can differ widely. the visual appearance of the characters in the alphabet is determined by the used.

In OpenOffice.org a single document can contain characters from different alphabets side by side.
