Baseline
The baseline of a font
is an imaginary horizontal line across the line of text.
It is in the baseline where the characters,
and glyphs
of a font orient their positions.
Most characters rest on the baseline itself. Other special characters and formatting elements
however measure their position based on their distance from the baseline.
For example, the line spacing
of the text in
paragraphs
base their measurements from one
baseline of text to the others above or below it. Drop caps
also determine their relative size in conjunction with the baseline of multiple lines of text.
