Operating System
An Operating System, also known as the "OS" is the primary software or program that manages
all other programs in the computer as well as its components. It is the one responsible for receiving
transmissions from input devices such as the keyboard
or mouse,
sending data to output devices such as the monitor or a printer. It also keeps track of files
and directories
on the hard disk. All computer systems need an operating system in one form or another to operate.
The most common operating systems today are Windows
and the Macintosh Operating Systems
and they are found in most computers today. Other operating systems include the Linux and Unix
systems which are open source software and commonly are free.
OpenOffice.org applications
have been adapted for use with a variety of operating systems and there are
separate openOffice.org versions that are downloadable for each. Currently the supported operating systems
are Windows, Linux, Solaris, Macintosh OS and FreeBSD.
