Operator
An operator in mathematics is basically a function
used to
modify or operate other functions. Operators perform or process functions from inputes known as
operands.
For example, in the simple mathematical expression
"1 + 2"
the operator here is the plus sign (+). The operator basically represents a function or procedure that comes to effect between
the operands. In this case it is the addition of the two operands.
Operators are used in many fields or topics of mathematics. These include, among other things linear operators, differential or integral operators, operators in probability theory, Convolution, fourier and laplace transforms and the operators on scalar and vector fields.
