How-To: Overview of paragraph style options - OpenOffice.org
  1. This screencast gives an overview of the options available when modifying or creating a paragraph style. Remember that you must have the "styles and formatting" window open
  2. To start, filter the styles in the "styles and formatting" window to show only paragraph styles. Then right click on a paragraph style to bring up a context menu.
  3. Once the menu opens, click on the option "Modify..."
  4. The paragraph style options window should open. You should see several tabs in it representing the various options available for the currently selected style.
  5. Currently the "Organizer" tab is open. This tab let's you change the name of the selected style, set the styles it is linked with and sometimes even assign a style's category.
  6. Below the options, you should see a brief summary of the options set for the style.
  7. Now, let's look at the "Indents & Spacing" tab.
  8. This tab let's you set the length of the indentations for the paragraph style.
  9. You can also set the spacing between paragraphs and lines here.
  10. Next, let's take a look at the alignment options.
  11. In this tab you can adjust the paragraph style's text alignment by choosing an option here.
  12. Down here, you can also set the "Text to text" alignment using this drop down menu.
  13. Next up, we'll look at the "Text Flow" tab.
  14. This tab controls the settings for hyphenation and line or page breaks.
  15. Also, you should see other options here, including Orphan and Widow controls for misbehaving text.
  16. Next, we go to the "Font" options.
  17. This tab controls the font options for the paragraph style. Here you can set the font style, font size and the text's typeface. Below, there is also the option of changing the character set based on a language.
  18. Next, we move on to font effects.
  19. This tab let's you manage font effects like underlines, strikethroughs and the font color.
  20. There are also options here for more special effects like outlines, shadows, blink effects, and appearance.
  21. Next, we'll look at the "Position" tab.
  22. In this tab, you can set the paragraph's text to position themselves as a superscript, subscript or normal.
  23. You can also set the rotation and scaling of the paragraph, as well as the character spacing between letters.
  24. Next, we go to the "Numbering" tab.
  25. This tab let's you change the numbering style of the paragraph. This is most useful when you have lists or outlines in your paragraph
  26. Next, we'll go to the tab stops.
  27. This tab let's you set the position, type and fill character of tab stops for the paragraph style.
  28. Now, we go to the "Drop Cap" options.
  29. In this tab, you can enable or disable the display of drop caps. You can also edit the drop caps text, its lines, content and character style here.
  30. Next, we move on to the "Background" options.
  31. This tab let's you set the background of the paragraph style. You can set it either as a color or graphic.
  32. By default, the color option "No Fill" is the one selected. You can change the background color by clicking on one of the colors in this pallete.
  33. Lastly, we'll look at the "Borders" option.
  34. This tab let's you control the different properties of a border. Here you can adjust the border's spacing to contents, the line style, the line arrangement and the presence of shadows.
  35. You can also change the property of the border to merge with the next paragraph.
  36. Great! This finishes the overview of all the options available when creating or modifying paragraph styles. Congratulations!
