Link styles using the style organizer tab - OpenOffice.org

How-To: Link styles using the style organizer tab - OpenOffice.org
  1. You can link styles so that they share some common characteristics. To do this, first open the "Styles and Formatting window by pressing "F11" on the keyboard.
  2. Then look for the first style you want to link and right click over it.
  3. On the menu that opens, click on the option "Modify..."
  4. The window for style options should open. Look for the "Organizer" tab. If it is not open, click on it once.
  5. Now, look for the "Linked with" field, and click on the down arrow for its menu here.
  6. A list of styles should appear. It is here where you can link the currently selected style to another one. Just click on the style you want.
  7. For this example, we have selected the "Heading" style.
  8. Once you're done, click on "OK."
  9. Next, let's go to the "heading" style to change it. Right click over it to bring up the context menu and click on the option "Modify..."
  10. Good! Now to demonstrate the link between the styles, we shall change the background color of this style. So we are clicking on the background tab here.
  11. Once the tab is open, we click on a color for the background.
  12. Then, let's close the window by clicking on "OK."
  13. Good! Notice that some of the headings have already changed to match what we've done to the "Heading" style.
  14. When we look at them closely...
  15. ...observe that they still have different font styles. Only the background has changed.
  16. Also, notice that they have different style names here in the styles and formatting window.
  17. This means that the styles were linked to the changes made to the "Header" style, while they still preserve their other characteristics.
  18. Congratulations! You have learned how to link and check styles.
