How-To: Using the variable cursor - OpenOffice.org Math
- This screencast shows you how to use the variable cursor.
- Now, first notice that we have a summation expression here, with a number of different variables.
- To see the variable cursor, just click beside any of the variables here on the "math commands window." In this case we have clicked beside the variable "n."
- Good! Notice that a small gray square surrounds the variable "n" here. This is the variable cursor.
- It basically indicates where the typing cursor is on the "math commands window" in relation to the formula displayed here.
- Now, let's move the variable cursor by clicking here beside the "X" variable.
- Great! As you can see, the variable cursor has indicated that the "X" variable is the one now selected in the math commands window below.
- This is good as it let's you visualize which part of the formula you are editing as you type through the math commands window.
- It is especially useful if you have more complex expressions, like the upper and lower limits here that appear on top or below the main line of the formula.
- As you can see again, the variable cursor indicates which variable, and which part of the formula the typing cursor is. Even if it is in the upper...
- ... or lower limit.
- Great! You have learned how the variable cursor works, and how it is used. Congratulations!
