Paths

This section contains the default paths to important folders in OpenOffice.org. These paths can be edited by the user.

Type / Path List

To modify an entry in this list, select it and click Edit. You can also double click the entry.

Default

The Default button resets the predefined paths for all selected entries.

Edit

Click to display the Select Path or Select Paths dialog.

Entries in the Path List

You can change the sequence of entries by clicking the bar in the Type column. The column width can be changed by moving the separator between the columns with the mouse.

In the following list of paths, {netinstall} stands for the main OpenOffice.org directory, which may reside on a network file server. The user data for each user is stored in the {user} directory, which is located in the user's Documents and Settings directory.

Entries in the path list with more than one path

Some entries may contain more than one path. The {netinstall} directory contains files that can only be read, not written, by all users. The system administrator can define common paths to Gallery or graphics in the {netinstall} directory.

Every user has an own {user} directory, to which the user also has write-access. On UNIX systems, this directory is inside the Home directory, on Windows systems it resides inside "Documents and Settings\[username]\Application Data". When the user first starts OpenOffice.org, the {user} directory is copied from the {netinstall}/presets directory.

The OpenOffice.org Directory Structure

In OpenOffice.org, the following folders and files have special meaning.

Directory / File

Description

{user}/user/autotext

The AutoTexts are stored in this folder as files. Save these files before a new installation to keep your defined AutoText entries.

{user}/user/backup

If automatic backups are enabled, this directory will store all automatically created backup copies. For more information, see Backup copy.

{user}/user/wordbook

This folder contains all custom dictionaries for the spellcheck.

{netinstall}/share/plugin or {user}/user/plugin

This folder contains the Plug-ins that you installed in OpenOffice.org. OpenOffice.org recognizes the plug-ins installed in Netscape, Mozilla, or the Microsoft Internet Explorer, so you normally do not need to install plug-ins in this folder.

{netinstall}/share/fonts/truetype

If a user installed OpenOffice.org without administrator rights, the supplied Truetype fonts will be installed here.
