Format Page Numbering - OpenOffice.org Writer

How-To: Format Page Numbering - OpenOffice.org Writer
  1. Notice the two fields in hte footer. As they show their values, it is hard to determine which is the "Page Number" field. So we first need to view the field names.
  2. To view the field names, click on the "View" menu.
  3. Select the "Field Names" item from the menu.
  4. Notice, how the "1 of 2" has changed to "Page number of Statistics". Now we know exactly which field is the page number.
  5. To change the numbering format of a (numeric) field, double click on it.
  6. The "Edit Fields" dialog appears.
  7. Select the a format from the list.
  8. To finish the dialog, click the "OK" button.
  9. To verify the effect, we must hide the field names. Click on the "View" menu.
  10. Select the "Field Names" item from the menu.
  11. Notice, how the page number is now displayed in roman numerals, capital- "I" instead of number "1".
  12. Scroll down, to see the second page.
  13. As expected, the second page shows a roman "II".

Format page numbering

This screencast demonstrates how to format the "Page Number" field, for example in the footer of a text document in OpenOffice.org Writer. You learn:

  • How to position your cursor in the footer.
  • How to view field names.
  • How to format the "Page Number" field.
  • The appearance of a field in a text document.

This is an example for formatting a numeric field. The same can be applied to other fields.

Notice, that this edits the numbering format (similar to editing the numbering style of a list or headline), not the font, etc.
