  1. To directly open a microsoft word file with writer, first navigate to the file's location using the explorer.
  2. Once you see the file, right click over it to bring up a menu.
  3. When the menu opens, move your mouse over the option "Open With."
  4. A side menu should appear. Look for the OpenOffice Writer option. In this example it is named "swriter." Just click on it once.
  5. OpenOffice Writer should open automatically along with the Word file you selected. Congratulations!
