- Start with a new text-document, as indicated by the word "Untitled" in the window title.
- To save this document, click on the "File" menu.
- Select the "Save" item from the menu.

- Use the shortcuts on the left to navigate to "places" on your computer. Here we choose "My Documents".
- To create a new folder under "My Documents", click the "Create New Folder" button on the toolbar at the top.
- A "New Folder" appears in the list. It is automatically ready to change it's name.
- Start typing a new name for the "New Folder".
- Finish with the "Enter" key.
- To open the folder, double click on the icon.
- Now we are inside the new folder "OpenOffice-Writer".
- To give the document a file name, click in the field "File Name:".
- Type a name for the document.
- Normally you want to leave the document type at the default which is the "OpenDocument Text" (file extension ".odt").
- To save the document and close the dialog, click the "Save" button.
