How-To: Set the default save file format to Microsoft Word - OpenOffice.org Writer
  1. To set the default file format for saving text documents to the Microsoft Word format, first click on the "Tools" options here on Writer.
  2. Then, once the menu drops down, click on the option "Options..."
  3. The Open Office options dialog window should open.
  4. Now, we are going to look for the load and save options on this menu tree over here.
  5. In this example the OpenOffice.org menu is open. We shall close it by clicking on this "minus" icon.
  6. Next, we shall access the load and save options by clicking on this "Plus" sign beside the "Load/Save" option.
  7. Several items should appear below . Click on the "General" option once.
  8. The options for loading and saving documents for Open Office should open.
  9. Now, look for this down arrow and click on it once.
  10. This menu should let you choose the document type which we will change the save settings. Once the menu drops down, click on the option "Text Document."
  11. Next, set the save format for the documents by clicking this down arrow and choosing a format. In this example we want to save text document files as Word documents.
  12. So, once the menu drops down, click on the option "Microsoft word 97/2000/XP."
  13. Afterwards, just click on "OK."
  14. Good! Now to check, we click on the "File" option here.
  15. Then, on the menu that drops down, we click on "Save As..."
  16. As you can see, the default file format for saving text documents has changed to "Microsoft Word." Congratulations!
